Tourism: Principles, Practices and Philosophies
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (May, 1900)
Author: Robert Woodrow McIntosh
Average review score:

I really like this book!!
This book is very insightful on both, aspects of tourism and travel, as well as the financial affects that tourism can play on a country's economy. The authors seem to know what they're talking about and they're very good at relaying their knowledge to their readers in a concise way.

A great introduction to tourism
This text provides a great overview of the tourism industry, from what tourism is to its organization to the theories that help fomulate such a diverse industry. This book should be studied by every student studying tourism.

Outstanding blend of theory and implementation
This book offers a fusion of theory and practical advice that is directly relevant to managers - an area where many current tourism texts fall short. It is both strategic and tactical, providing readers with a broad overview of the tourism environment as well as implementable ideas for improving business performance. I have read and enjoyed the original version by McIntosh, and the new insights from Ritchie and Goeldner add new depth to an already exceptional read.

Look around. You'll find no book in the field as thorough and well written as this.

Trade IPOs Online
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (21 September, 2001)
Authors: Matthew D. Zito and Matt Olejarczyk
Average review score:

All nighter
This book kept me up all night, I couldn't put it down.

I was so tempted many times while reading to drop the book, run the the computer and start right then in the middle of the night.

Book is very easy to understand, not a lot of those fancy words you hear on CNBC or read in the Wall Street Journal. They take that stuff and bring it down to the level that an individual investor can understand.

Authors very motivating and relate their experiences in the market very well.

This is THE book for IPOs!
The authors of this book helped me get started in online IPO trading. I followed their steps and am finding huge success with IPOs! On my first trade, I bought 100 shares at $12 and sold at $20. I was pleased with this profit, because it was considerably more than I get from other "short term" investments. I waited for the right IPO to "freakin' hit!" as the authors say, and hit one that made me over $11,000 profit in about two hours on the first day of trade. I STILL can't believe it! The book clearly details everything you need to know and do to get into trading IPOs online. If you have more questions, the authors even have their own website where you can contact them and get your questions answered. They know their stuff! What a great book!

Outstanding Analysis/ Instruction for Online IPO Investing
The authors of this book have done an outstanding job of discussing and explaining techinques for investing in IPOs online. I believe that both the beginning and the experienced IPO investor will find this book to be a tremendous benefit in analyzing their IPO investment strategy. The presentation of the techniques in IPO investing available via the internet is clear, well written and certain help you increase your personal wealth. IPOs are no longer an investment vehicle for the elite investor.

Trading and Exchanges: Market Microstructure for Practitioners
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (October, 2002)
Author: Larry Harris
Average review score:

Great content, great writing!
I have been trading for 8 years. 6 years prop trading, I now run a hedge fund. We make about 10,000 trades/day. I wish I had read this book years ago. I've had to pay Mr. Market a large sum to learn many of these lessons. Larry Harris has written what I consider to be the best book in the field of trading. He covers nearly all topics, from structural & regulatory issues, to descriptions of the players; costs to performance evaluation. Presentation is excellent - the numerous sidebars, tables & graphs serve to illustrate the text. My only complaint is that the book does not take the quantitative side far enough. I recommend a technical appendix plus specific references (perhaps annotating the excellent bibliography) for the mathematically inclined reader.

If you are interested in trading, or curious about the markets, buy and read this book!

Encyclopedic, Yet Readable and Accessible
If you don't understand how the markets work, want to learn more, and are willing to invest an immodest amount of time and money, this is a book you must read.

Larry Harris is a brilliant contributor to the understanding of markets, and is currently Chief Economist of the Securities and Exchange Commission. This book however, is written as a textbook for the introductory markets class he taught at USC for many years.

Larry's book pulls back the curtains on the mystery and mumbo-jumbo of what happens when investors buy and sell securities. The book is lightly written, with many anecdotes and amusing sidebars, yet presents the latest and best knowledge on how (and why) markets work.

A Book That is Unmatched By Any Other....
Professor Larry Harris has compiled the most informative, enjoyable, and clear information that any book of this kind has. He is the best professor at the Marshall Business School. I took a class of his and learned and enjoyed the great study of market microstructures. I recommend this book to anybody with in interest in all the players involved in the game of trading.

Understanding the Digital Economy: Data, Tools, and Research
Published in Hardcover by MIT Press (16 October, 2000)
Authors: Erik Brynjolfsson and Brian Kahin
Average review score:

To truly understand the information age, read this book!
I'm a voracious reader of books and articles about recent developments in information technology (IT). This book is the first I've found to present the latest research in economics, business, and public policy related to IT, and to do so in a way that is accurate, comprehensive, readable, and engaging. The editors deserve kudos for their choice of articles and for enforcing the analytical rigor so often lacking in consulting reports and popular articles in this field. I heartily recommend this book!

Some great stuff in here!
Some of the chapters in this book have priceless material, e.g. the Chapter on "Understanding Digital Markets" by Smith, Bailey and Brynjolfsson and the review of technology's role in growing income inequality by Katz.

We need more research like this.

The Definitive Guide
This book is an essential antidote to all the fluff out there written by pundits and consultants. The books consists of 14 chapters written by experts in the field reporting original research on how the digital economy really works and how it is transforming business.

Anyone interested in seriously understanding the "new" economy needs to read this book.

1999 Electronic Commerce Assurance Services
Published in Paperback by Harcourt Brace Professional Pub (November, 1998)
Authors: Karl D. Nagel Cpa and Glen L. Gray Ph.D. Cpa
Average review score:

'Must' Reading for CPAs
The 1999 Guide to Electronic commerce Assurance Services , by Karl D. Nagel and Glen L. Gray is "must" reading for anyone considering or currently performing assurance services for computer networks or related Internet Web sites. The savings of time from reading and use of forms and processes in the book will exceed the cost of the book by multiples over 10 fold. If I had the content of the book before I ventured into promoting and providing WebTrust and related Internet services over a year ago, I could have saved my firm thousands of dollars. Currently, the book is the "Bible" for providing WebTrust services. The content includes material that should have been provided by the AICPA prior to the introduction of WebTrust services in the fall of 1997. This book is the best, most comprehensive and complete source for WebTrust providers. If a CPA wants to take advantage of the extraordinary rapid Internet use growth, the book should be read.

A Must for CPAs
Forward thinkers in the CPA community believe that the traditional financial statement audit services performed by CPAs will die out in the future. As the speed of information increases the audited financial statement, prepared months after a company's year end, becomes less meaningful. As banks, regulators, and customers begin to gain access to real-time financial information, the integrity of systems that produce that information becomes the important issue. Accordingly, CPAs must prepare for the new demands that will be made upon them.

Also, as indicated above, ECAS is potentially a substantial source of fees, capitalizing on the trust the public has in CPAs, and upon the CPA's skill set.

This book is an essential tool for the CPA that wants to build an ECAS practice.

A Valuable Tool for Web Site Operators

A large part of this book is devoted to the analysis of electronic transaction systems. IS managers responsible for building and maintaining e-commerce systems, and e-commerce systems software, can use this book as a guide to building controls necessary for a secure system. Certainly, any Web site that wants to be awarded a CPA WebTrust seal will want to use part five of the book to determine if the Web site will pass an examination. The book can guide a company on the system controls necessary to earn a CPA WebTrust seal.

Conclusions

Overall, a good book, and one that belongs in the library of every CPA that performs auditing services and wants to be on the cutting edge of services to the rapidly increasing e-commerce industry. This is also a valuable book for Web site operators that want to insure their systems are safe and secure.

21st Century Money, Banking & Commerce

An Addition
Just an addendum to my previously submitted review: This review reflects my personal opinion and not necessarily that of the American Bar Association or any of its committees or subcommittees. Thanks!

One-Stop Shopping for E-Banking Law
As the chair of the American Bar Association's Subcommittee on Electronic Commerce, I recently reviewed this book for an upcoming issue of the South Carolina Law Review. In that review, I noted that few other works have addressed the intersection of electronic commerce and banking law, and characterized the book as "a consistently impressive combination of a treatise and a client memorandum." I found particularly useful the authors' detailed, informed, and intensely practical surveys of electronic payment technologies, regulatory actions, and judicial decisions. Separate sections, which can be read independently, are devoted to the missions and relevant activities of various regulatory agencies such as the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Other chapters discuss security and privacy of online banking systems, the operation of stored-value systems such as Mondex and Visa Cash, online brokerage and insurance services, intellectual property online, and Internet-based jurisdiction. I believe that this book is useful not only for reference but as a survey of developments in this rapidly-moving area. In my opinion, someone who sat down and read 50 pages a night of 21st Century Money, Banking and Commerce could get painlessly in two weeks more substantive information than most seminars on electronic commerce could deliver.

The ABC's of E-Strategy
Published in Digital by WizBizWeb, LLC ()
Author: Dan Geller
Average review score:

The ABCs of E Strategy
My MBA class in Strategic Leadership used this very simple text to develop a Strategic Business plan during our first term in the MBA program. The book is very succinctly written; and, when suggested guidelines are followed, a comprehensive Business Plan is the result. I felt that the plan I wrote was presentable for the implementation of a new business endeavor. Dan Geller has a gift for making a seemingly complex subject / project seem simple to accomplish.

Great tool for developing an e-strategy!
A must-have book for anyone interested in developing an e-strategy and/or starting a new business. It really helped me turn my vision into a viable business. You cannot write an effective business plan without reading this book first!

Africa in the Global Economy
Published in Hardcover by Lynne Rienner Publishers (February, 2000)
Author: Richard E. Mshomba
Average review score:

The African economic situation explained
Richard Mshomba's "Africa in the Global Economy" presents an excellent analysis of both the situation and causation of economic conditions in Sub-Saharan Africa. The economic policies of African countries in combination with the trade policies of developed countries have both contributed to the lack of real economic growth. My summary of the book would be this - African countries have continued to shoot themselves in the foot while developed countries, like the U.S., have held the gun.

For anyone with any interest in international economics, this is truly a great read.

A great book about sub-Saharan Africa. Read it!
Mshomba's "Africa in the Global Economy" is by far the best book I have ever read in international economics.

The author writes clearly and objectively in evaluating sub-Saharan trade policies.

I highly recommend it for those interested in learning more and understanding better sub-Saharan Africa from an economics point of view.

Asia's Digital Dividends: How Asia-Pacific's Corporations Can Create Value from E-Business

Dividends collected
The book contains so much information and strategic thoughts that is unfound in similar literatures.

While reading the book, I was guided by the Authors to traverse the frontiers of Marketing, Management and Communication and yet the concepts and case studies of many world renowned companies are seamlessly fused together to answer one question: How to reap divideds in Asia's digital business environment?

Other assets in the books are that the chapters are well organised so each one can be independently written to cater for
individual interests; also the charts show works of valuable and serious research, analysis and presentation.

I felt I have collected handsome dividends already at the finish of the third chapter,
